Cologne Cathedral

Cologne is famous for the well-known Cologne Cathedral. This is the largest cathedral of Germany and the highest tower is 157 meters high which is even one of the highest towers in the world. Millions of tourists visit Cologne annually to admire and visit this stunning phenomenon. When stepping into the cathedral, impressive Gothic architecture, the colossal size of the cathedral, and the magical stained windows welcome you whole heartedly. When mounting the 509 stairs of the highest tower, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view over the city. The historical church bells of the cathedral can be found in the tower, as well. You could also pay a visit to the treasure room of the cathedral in which you can find all kinds of ‘treasures’.

City gates and churches

When walking through Cologne, you might notice the incredible amount of churches and city gates. You can find one of the twelve Roman churches at practically every corner of the street. All of these churches were built between 1000 and 1200 which makes them older than the Cologne Cathedral. All churches are picturesque, of course, but only a true fanatic visits them all. However, it is recommended to visit one or two of the churches. You can also find four city gates in Cologne. These were all built in the Middle Ages and you’ll undoubtedly come across one. In case you haven’t spotted one yet and you would like to admire one before you leave, then you should look for the Eigelsteintorburg. This gate is located in a neighbourhood famous for its nightlife and is also near Hauptbahnof.

Hohenzollernbrücke

When talking about Cologne, we must not forget to mention the Hohenzollernbrücke. You might have already travelled on it if you arrived in Cologne by train. The bridge characterizes Cologne and the view over the Rhine is stunning. It might even be better to walk the bridge at night, since you’ll see the lights of the city from afar. This is a great sight to see. You can also admire the iron constructions when walking the 410 meters long bridge. You can walk the bridge from two sides but the south-side is perhaps a little more beautiful because you’ll have a great view of the Cologne Cathedral. You can also seal your love on the bridge by hanging a lock on the fences between the rails and the path. That is if you can still find a spot…

Rheinauhafen

As you may have gathered by now, the Rhine flows beside Cologne which means that the city has got a port. This port was the most important one of the city in the past, but it serves as a marina today in which modern, glass buildings stand. The buildings serve as apartments and offices. You could also eat deliciously in one of the many restaurants or go shopping because you can find many shops at the port. It’s possible to visit one of the two museums, too. You could, for instance, learn everything about the production and history of chocolate at the Imhoff-Shokoladenmuseum or perhaps you’d like to know something about the interesting history of the Olympic Games at the Deutsches Sport and Olympia Museum. The atmosphere at the Rheinauhafen is always amazing, so do make a walk along the port and seat yourself at one of the many restaurants.

Town hall of Cologne

Another popular tourist attraction is Cologne’s town hall. This is said to be the best-preserved middle-aged building in Cologne and this is immediately visible on the outside of the building. The fact that this is the oldest town hall in Germany makes the building even more special. The town hall contains several parts and most of them were built in different eras. You might spot different styles because of that when admiring the town hall. Not all parts of the town hall are accessible for tourists but it’s still recommended to pay a visit to the town hall because it’s an impressive building.

Cable car

Have you had enough of museums, historical churches and cathedrals and would you like to admire the city in a spectacular way? You can do this by boarding the cable car. The Kölner Seilbahn ‘flies’ over the Rhine and you can enjoy a breath-taking view. If we may believe the half million passengers who go for a ride annually. It has been declared to be the safest transportation device of Cologne, because there has never occurred an accident since its opening in 1957. It’s even possible to board the cable car at night on some days. You might be lucky and gain an unforgettable experience! It must be noted that the cable car is only open from April until October.

Kölner Zoo

When disembarking the cable car, you can buy tickets for the Kölner Zoo right away, which is the third oldest zoo in Germany. The perfect excursion in between visiting the historical sights. It’s not just an old zoo, but also a very large one. The zoo is the home of around 10,000 animals divided over 750 different kinds. Thus, there’s enough to do at the zoo. Just like in every zoo, plates are distributed over the park on which you can read fun facts about the animals. You could also choose to get a tour by one of the staff-members, who will share even more information about the animals.

Cologne's Altstadt

The Altstadt is known as a convivial and fun spot. You’ll find restaurants, cafeterias, and walking paths along the Rhine amongst other things at the Altstadt. The place is characterized by the colourful houses known as Stapelhäuser. This means that ships that docked there, had to stay a couple of days to sell their products in the city. The products were stored in the Stapelhäuser, so the colourful houses served as warehouses. Today, it’s known as one of the most convivial places in Cologne and locals often gather here to drink or eat something in one of the many restaurants. Several canal cruises also depart from the Altstadt.
