Estádio do Dragão

The Estádio do Dragão (Dragon Stadium) is a stadium in Porto. It is the home base of football club FC Porto. Estádio do Dragão has a capacity of 50,033, which makes it the third largest stadium of Portugal. The first official match was played on 16 November 2003, when FC Porto defeated FC Barcelona with 2-0.

Naming of Estádio do Dragão

The Estádio do Dragãowas was built to substitute the former stadium Estádio das Antas and to serve as one of the stadiums in which the European Championship of 2004 would take place in. Finals of the Champions League and Nations League were also hosted at the Estádio do Dragão. The stadium's name refers to the dragon in FC Porto's logo. It wasn’t particularly obvious yet what the official name of the stadium would be. There were several name options, like taking over the name of the old stadium, or to name it after a person who had meant much for the club.

Construction of Estádio do Dragão

The construction of the stadium was stopped for a while after Porto’s mayor announced he had other plans for the stadium. FC Porto’s board had to agree with the plan before the construction could continue. The building of the stadium costed no less than 125 million euros and in order to finance this, every stand is sponsored. How supporters are distributed over the stands has remained the same as in the old stadium; away fans can take a seat at the right side of the east stand and the northern and southern stands are still possessed by hardcore fans.

Visit Estádio do Dragão?

The stadium is pretty close to the centre of the mesmerizing Porto. It only takes 15 minutes to get to the Estádio do Dragão from the city’s centre. It only takes 11 minutes when going by train and 13 when going by bus. Since it only takes four minutes by taxi, you could also choose to use to travel through taxi. Taxis already cost less abroad, and with this short amount of time it will likely cost the same as a train or bus ticket. Would you rather walk to the stadium?
